Are Legal Consultations In Florida More Affordable Than Most People Expect?

People believe that hiring a lawyer is an expensive proposition that they can’t afford. However, my consults are either free or $250 for 30 minutes.

In 30 minutes, I can tell you everything you need to know:

  • The parameters of your case
  • If you have a cause of action
  • The strengths or weaknesses of your case
  • Next steps in your case, and how to get to where you want to go
  • General timelines
  • How much will the process cost?
  • What you can expect from this whole process
  • Odds for success

People usually come to a consultation with a lot of anxiety. They leave feeling calmer about their situation than when they came in. Depending on your problems, you’re saving a lot of money by spending a small amount.

Often, I see people who signed something they shouldn’t have or who got involved in a deal they didn’t fully understand. In these situations, for a few hundred dollars, you can ultimately save hundreds of thousands of dollars.

If your issue is bankruptcy, foreclosure defense, probate, or a partition action, those are free consultations. These are straightforward issues I can handle quickly. If you think hiring a lawyer is costly, it’s usually less expensive than going to a car mechanic.

How Can Early Legal Advice During A Consultation Help Prevent Costly Legal Mistakes Later On?

Before making significant legal decisions, take 30 minutes and meet with a lawyer by phone, Zoom, or in person. Regarding any legal issue you’re facing, I can tell you for $250 whether you’re headed down the wrong road.

For example, we do a lot of title work for people transferring or selling properties. While it may seem easy to prepare your own deed, it’s just as easy to make critical mistakes. The lack of proper language or the use of inaccurate sentences in the deed can be the difference between an easy transfer and a giant mess requiring probate. By failing to spend $350 for a proper deed transfer, you now have an $8,500 probate problem.

If you’re dealing with any legal issue involving large sums of money — whether it’s a house, borrowing, or loaning money — $250 for a consultation will be well spent. What you’re spending is usually a fraction of what you’re risking if you make mistakes.

How Can A Florida Attorney Use A Legal Consultation To Identify Resources Or Solutions You May Not Have Considered?

It’s not uncommon for people to pursue legal solutions that are either inappropriate for their circumstances or the longest, most complicated way of accomplishing their goals. For example, you see that pattern when it comes to estate planning.

People frequently want to establish a trust for whatever reason they’ve heard or read about. However, the average person doesn’t necessarily have sufficient assets that require the protection of a trust. Rather than spending $2,800 to $3,500 for a standard trust, you can have a consultation with me, and I can fill out a deed and some other forms for less than $500. For 85% of people, that’s all the estate plan they’ll need.

People also often feel they can fill out legal documents themselves, such as a sales agreement for their house, without making mistakes. However, if done improperly, you can lose tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in equity. You’ll then need help unwinding a situation that shouldn’t have occurred in the first place. We do this kind of work all the time.

Notes From The Field: Why Do Financially Stressed Clients Often Benefit The Most From Scheduling An Initial Legal Consultation?

If you’re wealthy and make a $10,000 mistake, you’ll bounce back from that. If you’re financially stressed, you have the most to lose. If you are worth $10,000 and you lose $10,000, you’re bankrupt.

People with the most to lose are often the least likely to seek help and generally the least informed about their situation. Regardless, in my practice, I often find that people with the least amount of economic resources are generally more inclined to pay for a consultation.

I recently met with a man attempting to sell a $1.75 million parcel of land. Because it was landlocked, it couldn’t be sold. While he wanted me to assess his situation, he didn’t want to spend $250 to figure out how to salvage a $1.75 million property he was trying to sell.

I was prepared to review the parcels, devise a strategy, and speak with him about his expectations. Unfortunately, he balked at spending $250.

This scenario is why many consults aren’t free: I need to know whether you’re serious about your situation or simply wasting my time by seeking professional advice for free.

I met with a woman recently who was on the verge of getting hustled out of her 50% interest in a property worth $150,000. She paid $250, and we came up with a strategy. If our strategy doesn’t work, we have a plan B. It’s worth noting that she spent $250 and will probably save at least $50,000, just because of our conversation.
